I believe that one person may not be able to make much of a difference, and that there is strength in numbers.
Also, I disagree with the part where you save loved ones first before saving others.
You should save yourself before even attempting to save someone else. As the saying goes, 'He who runs away today, lives to fight another day'.

Condemn me for being selfish, you may. Your own life is as important as others, I know. As long as you survive, you can help others along the way, and that in turn will help make a bigger difference than sacrificing your life here and now instead of living and saving many other lives another day.

The three aspects I would choose are loyalty, determination and family.

For loyalty, I believe that humans should be loyal to their family and friends. Betrayers are whom I condemn. Loyalty is the root of all the aspects. Being loyal to the beliefs, being loyal to fellow comrades and being loyal to the country to protect itself in times of need.
Determination is the desire to protect. Courage is the desire to protect. They are both the same. Determination does much more than courage. Determination brings loyalty, strength and courage.
Family spirit is important. People in a family are loyal to one another, and will not betray one another. United, we stand. Divided, we fall.

I admire your selflessness in striving to save as many people as possible and to protect the national identity in times of crisis. Although there is a limit to what one person can do, there are also cases where one person can make a difference.
I think we should always try to save our loved ones first before we try to make a difference and save others.

I would defend my home, my family and friends. If we do not have a home, where can we go, where would we live? The family forms the basic unit of society, without which life would be quite meaningless. Our family and friends are important as they are people whom we can depend on to help us in times of need.
The three aspects that are important would be determination, perseverance and steadfastness. Determination will keep me going forward. Perseverance will help me weather the challenges. Steadfastness will keep me on the task.
All these would help me to decide what and who to defend and protect in times of crisis. This is becoming more important as there is always a threat that terrorists might strike Singapore one day. I would definitely protect my family, my friends, my country and all that is close to me. If not for them i would not be able to become what I am today. I might be some arrogant brat that doesn't care about anything. The world is a large place, but I was born in Singapore, my homeland, if I do not protect it what would become of it. Even if i do not really like it, i would still try my best to protect it as it is where I was born. My friends are also very dear to me as they have provided me the motivation to move on for a long time. Even if they are not very close to me, they also have to deserve to stay alive, not everyone is as fortunate as us to be able to live such good lives, therefore we have to protect it and not waste it away just like that

The three aspects that are I will go on for is, determination, love, and happiness.

Determination is one of the few aspects I would go for as it pushes me to go on, or I would not be able to do anything. Giving up is not much of an option if you are defending all that is dear to you.

Love is another important aspect as it provides me the drive to move on to save all that have been with me for all these years making me stand back on my feet whenever I fall. How could I forget these important things

Happiness is also a very important aspect as without it I would not have the determination to do anything as my life would be to terrible to be able to live it through. I would most probably be too depressed to do anything during the battle, even if lives are at stake.

If ever a threat or crisis looms over Singapore, the foremost thing on my mind would be the defense of my family. My family is my life, the people who made me who I am and an inseparable part of my life. Without them would be akin to ripping your heart in two. 

I would agree that many people would be quick to criticize my views, slamming me for choosing my family over my country, asking where is my sense of patriotism and generally having the impression that I am a selfish coward. 

These people are right in a sense. At the surface it does indeed seem like I am selfish, preferring to whisk my family to safety first. But if one looks a bit deeper and has the comprehension to understand the principle behind my actions, they too would agree with me.

Like Confucius said many centuries ago, happy and peaceful families are the strong foundations that hold up great nations and civilizations. The force that decides whether a nation is glorious or falls into ruin is the family. If families are unhappy, discontent and do not trust their own leaders, how can you expect the nation to survive in peacetime, let alone war? There would be rebellions, coups and uprisings all over the nation. Of course the government could try suppressing all these, but how long can they do it? Don't forget, the soldiers in the armies also have families of their own. How long before their families convince or force them to help overthrow the government? In the end one has to agree that history has and will continue to prove that families are an integral part of society. 

Three aspects of society I believe are worth fighting and dying to protect and defend. 

Family: The building blocks of society and the people closest to you.

Friends: The people you share common interests with, grow up with or stand alongside in times of crisis.

Freedom: All humans are free to make their own choices and suppressing that is a blatant violation of the laws of nature.

I agree with Yan Hui on the majority of his views but I have to digress once he touches on the issue of defending his country. 

Perhaps one might think that country is the most important thing we should strive to defend. 

But what about the spirit of the people? Even if you keep the nation, which is simply a piece of land, but lose the spirit of the people, who become depressed, unhappy and lose the will to recover, how can one expect the country to pick itself up? 

Although what if you keep the spirit of the people? Like the old saying, "keep the flame alive", if the flames of determination are kept alive, the people would eventually prevail and ultimately reclaim their nation and pride back. What do I mean?

Look at France for example. When France surrendered to Nazi Germany , many of it's people were actually unhappy! They wanted to continue the fight and drive the invaders away. Notable among the growing resistance movement was no doubt Charles DeGaulle, a young French officer, who formed a Free French Army composed of French volunteers who were determined to reclaim their homeland. Here was a perfect example of the spirit of the people in action. 

Also worthy of mention is the mujahideen, Islamic guerillas who eventually drove the technologically superior Russians out of Afghanistan. They too are good examples of the spirit of the people in full swing. 

Of course if one can hold on to both country and spirit, that would be great. Although if one day the decision came to whether sacrifice all the nation's sons and daughters to keep the nation or lose the country but spare the bloodshed and keep the spirit alive, I would have to advise all who read this to think it through before they make too hasty a decision.

Perhaps after you read this you will think differently about this issue. Like General Douglas MacArthur famously declared during World War 2 when he had to abandon his men in the Philippines to the advancing Japanese, "Keep the flag flying, I shall return".

To me the people that i will protect are my loved ones. As they are the closest and most important to me. I will defend my country as it is where i grew up in and it's a place i can call home.

Courage , perserverance and loyalty are three different aspects.

Without courage, a person would not have the guts to protect what he desire to protect. He would only care about his own safety. With courage, even with the most difficult circumstances, you would do your very best just to defend your love ones.

Without perserverance, the person would just give up along the way while facing difficult obstacle, he would not even bother trying to overcome it. With perserverance, no matter how hard the obstacle it may be, i would definitely try all means just to overcome this obstacle which also to put one's will into full use as there is always light at the end of the tunnel and when there is a will there is a way.

My comment is that everyone must have courage, i agree. But, if you have the courage, you must be smart as well. If your friends were pinned down by enemy fire, you must be brave to save them. But you cannot run into the field and distract the enemy's fire. You would die and your friends would still be pinned.

Now, selflessness. If you always think about everyone else, you will always feel stressed. Also, if you give everything to everybody who is poor, you will also become poor as you have no possessions. No, the smart thing to do is to help those you can, not everybody.

Finally, you cannot be so helpful. I once was too helpful and sought to help everyone i could by teaching them. What happened was i did not complete my homework and stayed up late to finish it. Also, because of that, i fell asleep in classes and started to fail. No, that is not how to go. You should help, but not to the extremes.

The first thing that i would instinctively and would want to protect is my family. I would protect my family as they are the closest to me. They have also been there when i have ups and down. Secondly, i would protect my friends and my country.

I agree with you that self-sacrifice is sometimes needed to prevent people from getting hurt, but do you think that your own sacrifice could lead to the country being save? I also agree with all your aspects except for selfishness as selfishness would mostly lead to your downfall.

What makes you so sure that nobody or very little would get hurt, especially if it was a nation-wide crisis?  I agree with all of your aspects except selflessness. If you proceeded to protect other at the cost of self-sacrifice, then you would only be able to protect a handful, this will not get you anywhere near protecting everyone in a crisis.

I agree on your opinion that we should help and defend the needy, but are you so certain that you would be able to make sure that they would not get hurt? I also agree on your aspects as they really allow you to do and achieve great things but what happens if there is something that is impossible to achieve, will you still follow this mindset?

1. My family and friends are most dear in my life, I would protect and defend them and even people that i do not know. If i am unable to do so, i would still find ways of helping and make sure that no harm comes to them. If it may be a major issue such as war, i would definitely try my best to protect my country no matter how insignificant it would be.

2. The few aspects are bravery, determination and helpfulness. They are very important as without bravery, would you protect what is dear to you? Would you hide and run away when facing danger? If you are not determined when you fail, would you try and try again? If people are in need of help, would you just ignore them?

1. I would strive to protect and defend those in need, even if it is not in my power to do so. I would also make sure that as nobody or very little people would get hurt. I agree with you that CCTV can intrude some privacy. But, having to install one can help to reduce the crime rate, then it is worthwhile.

There is a way to solve the problem and that is to explain to the neighbors. An explanation is always helpful and citizens would understand because everyone hope that Singapore is free of crimes.
