I agree with who you want to protect, who is the closest people to you. I would instinctively do that too.

I agree with your three aspects as they all are required when one needs to lend a helping hand. Without courage, one would not go forward to help. Without Selflessness, one would never be able to sacrifice something without rewards. Without helpfulness, one would never ever help others at all.
